CANON: Vampire: The Masquerade
POINT IN CANON: mid-2001
AGE: 33
APPEARANCE: Jackie is an androgynous beauty. It's unreal how good he looks. Literally. For one, there's something almost uncanny valley about him due to the perfect symmetry of his features, and secondly he didn't acquire this level of appearance by natural means but by creepy vampire plastic surgery powers. He is East Asian, with brown hair, of medium height and lean build. If possible, he'll wear colourful clothes.
CANON HISTORY: Jackie was born in Korea, but he has no real connection to the country or its language or culture, having been adopted as a baby by a Swedish couple. He was raised in Gothenburg, a coastal city in the west of Sweden, and for the first almost two decades of his life things went pretty normally - he went to school, had some hobbies, went to the summer house with his family, and so on. Puberty happened and was upsetting, but he got over it. When he started to want to improve his pocket money a bit, he did all kinds of jobs. Among other things he worked as a waiter and errand boy in a posh sailing club, and being quite charming (or well, his customer facing persona was), he got quite a few perks out of it because a number of rich patrons liked him. One of them was a middle-aged noblewoman and her daughter, who invited him along on a few sailing trips.
Everything was great.
Until it suddenly wasn't. During his second year at university, things really went to shit: He got mugged, his best friend died in a freak accident, his mother lost her work, his father got injured. The family was kicked out of their flat for misconduct they hadn't committed, he got caught shoplifting which again he hadn't done. He lost his job at the sailing club and couldn't hold down any student jobs after, no matter how he tried. His studies went badly, his roommates kept moving on abruptly without a word, and so on. And then, his parents died in a car crash.
Life was absolutely terrible. But Jackie wasn't going to give up. He'd never been a quitter, and as much as people were appaled by it, he'd always coped best by shoving terrible things to the side and away.
And then, one day as he came home from a party he walked around a corner and ...he doesn't really remember what happened then, but he woke up to someone chucking a mirror at his face with a curse and leaving, and then realized that he lacked a heartbeat. As traumatizing as some earlier events in his life had been, this did definitely take the cake. But again, he got up. To his feet, out of the alleyway and home.
Only to realize the next morning that getting up was a disaster and stepping out into the daylight was impossible. He figured stuff out from there: That he was a vampire now and what the ups and downs of that were and that the city was currently held by an organization called
Sabbat. He learned that he had failed to manifest any clan markers - he never learned who his Sire had been and thus couldn't know for sure what his clan should have been, but he could still make a solid guess based on the angrily chucked mirror: The clan
Lasombra has the
trademark weakness of lacking a reflection. He also learned that due to Gothenburg being a Sabbat city, he could be part of a not-Clan called
Panders, giving him a place in the sect's structure. And he ended up as a part of a pack which consisted of five people: Two Lasombra, one Brujah antitribu, a Tzimisce named Brian and Jackie himself.
Out of all of them, Brian was the one that Jackie ended up being the closest to - they were just the right level of different to complete each other well, had similar interests, and a surprising amount of similar life experiences. Over the decade that they knew each other, Jackie managed to wheedle a fair amount of Brian's clan's Discipline out of the man, and Brian in turn learned things form Jackie that wouldn't have been taught to him directly.
At the end of that decade, the pack went to New York to investigate a strange rumour Brian had worried about - and thus they were present for the formal start of the vampire apocalypse. The massive fight in downtown New York, that both killed a number of people and exposed the existence of vampires t the wider public, also strongly affected Jackie. Not only did he lose most of his pack, him and Brian being the only survivors. He also re-encountered the daughter of the lady who'd taken him on boat trips way back when, who had not aged a day since then and happened to be of the same
generation as him and... you know, hindsight is 20/20. At least he knew who had turned his life to shit and sired him now?
The surviving members of Elle's pack, her, Charlie and Per, were going to investigate what was going on, and Brian and Jackie were interested in the same. Olivia joined as well, and thus the six of them continued onwards together. After some general briefing and politics, they headed back to Scandinavia to look into some occurrences there. While not greatly successful at first, they did pick up two more members for their little team: An independent Gangrel called Malin and an independent Ravnos called Rosa. Jackie is taken from shortly after those two women joined the group in their investigations.
CANON PERSONALITY: Jackie is not particularly brave. If given the chance, he'll abscond from any situation of danger. He will stand his ground if he really has to, but his definition of situations when he has to is narrower than that of most - pride plays close to no role, and there isn't really anyone whose survival he would put above his own. He will stand his ground if there's really nobody to use as his shield, or if the avoidance would only serve him in the short run - he does think in fairly long time frames.
Not excessively long, both because he is still quite young at only about a decade a vampire and because he doesn't trust his own continued survival enough to think in centuries when making decisions. But if it will serve him in five or ten years to do something now, there's a fair chance that he'll opt for it.
That said, much of what he does isn't due to any long term political considerations, but because he thinks it's fun. He's the kind of person who would absolutely do things for the vine (as long as they don't endanger his continued survival), and this includes things that involve people ending up dead. Humans are cattle, anyway.
Compassion is not a thing that Jackie does. Or rather it is not a thing he feels - if he stands to gain from a compassionate behaviour, if the target of compassion belongs to a group whose favour he'd like to be in, or if it might be fun, he can totally act compassionate. He just isn't on the inside.
At least on principle. As much as Jackie doesn't really do compassion unless it serves his purposes, he can bond with people who according to his worldview he should not befriend. The prime example of this is Iseul, a
Corax, whom he met a few years ago in a bar and developed a working friendship with based in their mutual love of gossiping about everyone else present and further developed by generally compatible personalities. They have made it an art form to dance around the species shaped elephant in the room and never mention anything that could compromise their own side. But it is just really nice to have someone outside of the whole vampire affair, that he can trust in a way that he cannot even trust his packmates.
Iseul aside, Jackie only really entertains strong bonds with the rest of his pack - most of all Brian. Brian is perhaps the closest that he has been to anyone since his parents died. They knew each other before being embraced and back then bonded over being the two people who visibly stuck out like sore thumbs at parties, discovered that they could both find an interest in each other's hobbies and when they ran into each other again by chance later, they happened to be at a point in their lives where they needed to decide whom to spend their next stretch of eternity with. Jackie wasn't a planned part of Brian's future, but he happened anyway. Brian sold it as Jackie being a pretty useful spy (which he is), but really - comfort in familiarity. Brian is the person that Jackie would risk the most for for without being compelled by any
vinculum or other bonds.
He is quite hard to trust anyone in general, and if, his trust is only ever partially given - which, considering his general situation, is the sane and life-preserving option. Vampires in general are not trustworthy, and the less anyone not a vampire knows about them, the safer for the entire species. And for Jackie, who has more structural protection than a Caitiff that isn't a Pander but still less than a vampire belonging to a proper clan, that is even more of a concern. In return, that makes his pack all the more important to him.
Jackie can be quite petty when you annoy him. He won't hold grudges for a terribly long time, but he will exact revenge in ridiculous ways (expect to wake up with an ugly nose) and retaliate for things that other may find to not hold enough consequence for this type of strong reaction.
As much as Jackie doesn't form strong bonds easily and isn't generally a nice person on the inside, he's pleasant to be around - fun, friendly enough, thoughtful if he wants to be, and quite relaxed. If anything his fault as simple fleeting company is that he talks a bit much. But he doesn't only like being chatty himself, he also enjoys others telling him stories about things, hearing news, and general gossiping.
He can seem quite silly and shallow, focused on looks and chattering an mile an hour about ridiculous stuff. He has no real aspirations of greatness and rarely demonstrates any strength or special feats. Generally, people will walk away from him with the impression that he is useful - he's a good spy, he can steal stuff - but pretty easy to manipulate and with not all that much going on in his brain.
That is a perfectly deliberate decision. He wants to appear harmless, but useful. Make people think that it is an excellent decision to keep him around, to even try and keep him safe from close up or far away. Be less expendable than others while at the same time being less of a risk as well. As someone who truly does not have any significant aspirations of raising through any ranks or gaining much power, that seems like the most successful survival method that he can think of.
Lastly, a note on gender. Jackie uses male pronouns and if asked would consider himself male, but it isn't by chance that he put so much effort into learning fleshcraft so he could adjust his own body to look as androgynous as possible. It just never was introduced to him, or otherwise occurred to him, that he could be anything but male (or female; he tried out a female body for a while, but it didn't work out either and he didn't really want to be socially female anyway. Or male, but that's... not registered as 'not wanting to be socially male' to him, it's just aspects of masculinity that he finds uncomfortable, as far as he's concerned). If introduced to the concept of being nonbinary and nonbinary pronouns, he would likely quickly shift to 'they'. But as he currently considers himself male, that's the pronouns I use.
POINT OF DEPARTURE: What would change about Jackie if he was infiltrating? Not much, really. But there are a few things that rest less at the core of who Jackie is and more in his being a Sabbat vampire, so some differences would stand out.
The first is that in most infiltrations he would be less flappant about the lives of strangers and much more adverse to killing someone himself. As a human, he had regular human levels of aversion to killing and general compassion towards others, so while he wouldn't suddenly be a pushover and still act aloof, he wouldn't simply shrug and move on, or even instigate someone's death.
The second is that there's a good chance of him being less distrustful if infiltrated. As a vampire living among vampires, he has pretty good reason to not trust anyone because like. Just. Don't trust vampires, that's generally a bad idea. And the only other person in his life that is really important to him is also someone around whom he constantly needs to watch what information he gives so it doesn't filter out to the wrong people.
After the fact, it probably wouldn't affect him very much. There is no type of infiltration that I can think of right now that would definitely affect him adversely, and while he would hate having lost control of himself, it didn't cause him any permanent trouble, so why worry?

M A R K S; JUSTIFICATION: Lovers
Jackie has choices that other vampires don't, not being tied down by a clan, and he is hyperaware of that. He's also hyperaware of the lack of protection that that means, which makes him perceive bonding and connecting with his pack, but also with others outside of it, as perhaps the most central thing to his continued survival. For a long time there has been a large feeling of doubt in his life - first doubting himself because everyone around him went wrong, and then doubting himself because he somehow didn't turn out a
proper vampire with a clan alliance.
He also is huge on physical attraction... to himself. And to other people whom he can fix up a bit. Or a bit more. Hey, those cheekbones really should be rearranged and toned, shouldn't they? He primarily learned fleshcrafting to perfect beauty.
Hermit
Jackie may not seem like he fits this stereotype, being the opposite of silent and reclusive, but he keenly feels distance - distance between himself and the world, distance between himself and all those vampires that have a clan. A proper clan, anyway. His isolation and quiet is, one might say, on the inside.
It also makes him feel alienated and a kind of lonely, even though he would never admit that. He's pointedly
not on an inner search, though. In fact he's trying his best to distract himself from that. He doubts that anything good could turn up.
MagicianHe's pretty self confident, only caring about what others think when he figures that their thoughts will have actual consequences for him, and can be quite manipulative.
